Lighting Up Your Charleston Garden for Outdoor Fun

Posted on by

Adding outdoor lighting features to your Charleston landscape not only brings ambiance and a sense of romance to your backyard but it also allows you to enjoy your space during the fall and early winter when the sun sets earlier.

Outdoor lighting – especially lanterns or DIY designs – transition perfectly into summertime fun. Used among your pots, gardens and trees, lights can turn a regular Charleston backyard into a festive party.

Try these three outdoor lighting ideas for your garden:

  1. Paver lighting: Line your pavers, stones or sidewalk with lights both for safety and to accentuate your home’s exterior. A well-lit pathway leading to your front door or to the seating area of your landscaped backyard is inviting and welcoming to your guests.
  2. Hanging lights: Drape your gazebo, patio or even the large oak tree in your yard with strings of white lights. You can even incorporate some DIY into your lighting by using canning jars, paper bags, grapevine and wine bottles as lighting fixtures. Here’s a list of 28 creative outdoor lighting crafts.
  3. Candles and torches: It’s tough to beat a table setting of candles or a yard lined with torches and lanterns. With new flameless, battery-powered candles, you can have the ambiance of candlelight with worrying a child or guest will accidentally knock one over. Plus you can set flameless candles near plants and not worry a leaf is too close to the flame. Situate the candles on the stairs or tabletops without the hassle of candle wax cleanup.

Shop the antique store for chandeliers or other items that can be outfitted into outdoor lighting fixtures. You can easily spray paint pieces to add color to your space or to complement the color pattern of your landscape design. Solar lights are also a great option, especially here in sunny Charleston. But, they only last about 4 hours so you may want to use them sparingly and supplement with electric or battery-powered lights that will last the duration of your outdoor party.

Lastly, work closely with your Charleston landscape designer to incorporate lighting into the overall plan so it flows seamlessly doesn’t look overdone. With the right floral design, furniture and outdoor lighting touches, your backyard will be fit for the cover of a magazine.
