We still have a few more weeks until the official start of spring, but that doesn’t mean we can’t start thinking about getting out into our yards and flower beds. While you’re still cozied up on the couch with a blanket, you can start brainstorming design ideas and making notes about what you like and what you don’t.

In addition to working with your landscape designer, you can do some of your own research. Review sites like Pinterest and Houzz for inspiration on everything from perennials to pots. You can create personalized bulletin boards and save those ideas that would look perfect in your own backyard.

This also helps you put your personal stamp on your design. Your backyard doesn’t have to exactly match the other homes in your neighborhood. You can add an antique sculpture, colorful planters or a shade structure that makes your space uniquely yours.

Lastly, play to your strengths. Assess the good qualities of your existing space to see how they can complement the design. Do you have lots of large trees or a natural clearing ideal for a seating area? Think about how those elements can enhance your Charleston landscape.
